Ericsson R320S. Mobile phone review
Review
The phone comes with heavy instructions in Russian and English. And this is in addition to the fact that there are these instructions on the CD, however, as well as software for synchronizing the phone book and SMS manager with a PC, the programs are quite simple, so I will not describe them, synchronization takes place via the infrared port, but it is also possible to purchase an interface cable . The instructions are very detailed and the localization is carried out very well, almost all aspects of working with the phone are described. In addition to the user manuals, the box contains the phone itself, a standard battery, a fast charger and a clip that can be screwed to the back of the phone. It should be noted right away that in this model the clip is finally made really convenient and now the phone can be worn on the belt without any problems. So, insert the SIM card into the holder and snap the battery into place. The holder is very convenient and securely fixes the card, the same applies to the battery latch, it is fixed in the socket well and there was no such play as the R380s battery. Externally, the battery protrudes above the back wall, and it seems to me that it would be more convenient to make it flush. Standard Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 850 mAh, which should ensure the phone's standby time up to 65 hours and talk time up to 280 minutes according to the manufacturer. Real use has shown that with a daily limit of 20-25 minutes and without turning off at night, it is quite capable of working for three days. Another interesting point, in my opinion, is related to the fact that you can use an ultra-flat battery with this model, in this case the back wall of the phone turns into a plane, but the cost of this battery is quite high, and its capacity is enough for less than a day, which makes its purchase is completely pointless. Even then it is better to pay a little extra and buy a high-capacity battery. Before proceeding to describe the capabilities of the phone, I will say a few words about its appearance. Many people call this phone very large and use such epithets as a hammer, you can kill, and so on. Psychologically, this is due to several reasons, the first and main one is that a person sees the phone only from the face and does not imagine its thickness, and it is only one and a half centimeters (the thickest part). The second reason lies in Ericsson's marketing policy, namely, that this particular model was advertised about six months ago as the most advanced WAP-enabled Ericsson phone. Advertising posters with giant images of the R320s were hung on most highways in Moscow, which played a big role in the perception of this phone. In general, the dimensions of the device 130x51x15 mm and the weight of 95 grams allow it to feel at ease in the category of business devices, to which it belongs. Unfortunately, most devices sold in Moscow are in Atlantic Blue, like the one I tested, but there are other colors, one of them is shown in the first photos of the review. In general, disputes about phone design are the last thing, as well as disputes about tastes. Nevertheless, there is such a point of view on this model that this is a male phone. As a rule, this is what men over thirty say, who are impressed by the size of the device. In my opinion, the dimensions of the R320s are convenient in terms of functionality. But back to the phone itself. The first charge of the battery lasts about 3-4 hours and at the same time, if the phone is turned on, the battery charge indicator gradually fills up. The indicator is made very convenient, it does not have a clear division and shows the battery level more accurately, and, of course, in graphical form. If you want to know how long the phone can work in standby or talk mode, then just press the volume control on the left in standby mode. The screen will display information about the estimated battery life in both modes. As practice has shown, the battery status is calculated with each call and is an approximate value. As indicated in the instructions, these parameters can exceed the real ones by 20 percent. Nevertheless, the function is very useful and gives at least a rough idea of the running time. The second interesting fact related to the battery for this model is that branded Ericsson batteries are automatically detected by the phone, but in the case of non-original batteries, instead of fast charging, the phone switches to slow charging mode and instead of 1.5-2 hours, the charging time is up to 3 -4 hours. This is done so as not to damage the battery or the phone itself. We turn on the device When you turn on the phone, the Ericsson splash screen is displayed and then the phone asks you to enter the date and time (only when you turn it on for the first time). It is possible to turn off the initial screen saver or enter your own welcome message. The default language is English, although it must be read from the SIM card. We climb into the menu and set the Russian language. You can get to the menu by pressing the navigation keys (4 directions), in particular, the left or right arrow. The menu is organized as tabs at the top, there are seven in total. Each bookmark has its own menu items. Despite the fact that the screen of this model is quite large and with emerald backlight (similar to T28) and allows displaying up to 5 lines of text, the entire menu does not fit on it and you have to scroll down using the arrow. Each menu item and submenu has its own number, and by entering the menu, you can simply dial the numeric sequence to open the desired item. Undoubted convenience is the ability to assign up to 4 menu items for quick access. So, for example, the left arrow when pressed for a long time displays a list of profiles with the ability to select the one you need. There are 6 profiles in total and all of them can be edited by the user. What is most interesting, the name of the profiles was not Russified, they are called Normal, Outdoors, Meeting, In car, Port H-free and Home. In each profile, you can configure phone numbers from which calls will be accepted by the phone, otherwise the call will be rejected. It is also possible to select the volume of the call, the mode of operation of the vibrating call. Immediately I want to say a few words about the loudness of the call, which did not please me. The call is quiet and almost inaudible in noisy, crowded places. The vibrating alert will save the situation, but only if you wear the phone in a jacket or jeans, you don't feel it in your jacket pocket. There are 10 call melodies in the phone, but you can create up to 4 of your own melodies, which is very nice. Melodies can be assigned not only to a certain type of incoming calls (voice, data), but also for personal subscribers, there can be up to 10 such people in total. switched off phone. Otherwise, it's a normal alarm clock that can only be set to a specific time. Despite such a quiet call, the volume of the phone speaker during a call is very high. At maximum volume, it seems that the interlocutor is very close and literally speaks into your ear. Another reason for this is the clean sound of the speaker. Talking on the phone is extremely pleasant and such annoying things as noises are extremely rare. The echo effect was also almost never present and was only in places with poor reception. But the sensitivity of the device is quite average, I expected a little more from a business device. And if the R380s worked like clockwork, then the R320s obviously had problems similar to those that are present in most Ericsson models. Here I'm talking about spontaneous loss from the network and, accordingly, the inability to make calls. In areas with fairly confident reception, where other phones worked very well, the signal from this particular model periodically disappeared, then literally immediately it appeared again, but, alas, the phone wrote "Only 112". The funny thing is that re-registration on the network is easier to do by turning the phone on / off, otherwise you can wait up to half an hour for it. Further, even more fun, it was not possible to repeat the experiment at the same place with the device falling out of the network, this property manifests itself spontaneously and in various places. I want to make a reservation right away that it is quite possible that this is a software problem of my device, and not all Ericsson R320s phones, but this seems to me a big stretch, since other models have similar problems. I think that the ideal behavior of the R380s can be explained precisely by the correct operation of the software. Other features you need and don't need First of all, it is necessary to note the convenience of using the phone keyboard. The buttons are large enough and easy to press, they are moderately tight and thus partially protected from accidental pressing. It is possible to turn on the keypad lock, for this it is enough to hold down the C key and select the lock item. In the same place it is possible to turn off all phone signals. But back to the keypad lock, it only works until the first incoming call or message is received, then unlocking follows. This is not always convenient, since, for example, I don’t always hear the phone, and the keyboard is already unlocked, then after talking or reading a message, I have to go back to the menu and turn on the lock, sometimes it gets pretty annoying. Much more conveniently, this issue is resolved in Siemens phones, after the conversation, auto-lock is turned on again. For all incoming, outgoing and missed calls, a single log will be introduced indicating the time of the call, its type and date, the capacity of the list is 30 calls. Moreover, the time is indicated only for calls made in the last 24 hours, then only the date is displayed. To view data about the call time, just stop at the line with the number and all the data will be shown in a pop-up window. In general, for all menu items there are similar tooltips, which is sometimes convenient, since it can be difficult to get into the instructions. Another interesting feature is the auto-save of an unknown number. If you receive a call from an unknown number after a conversation or after you have spoken by dialing a number not in the phone book, you will be prompted to save it. You can disable this function, however, the phone remembers unknown numbers in a separate list and when adding a number to the phone book, it will offer this list, which is extremely convenient. The phone book allows you to store up to 99 numbers in the memory of the phone itself and also, of course, enter the numbers on the SIM card. Subscriber names can be written in Cyrillic. Phones stored from 2 to 9 cells are speed dial phones and will be dialed by pressing the corresponding keys. Another interesting feature is that when you long press the keys from 2 to 9, the phone book will be shown as a list from the letter that is first shown on the key. This feature saves you from tedious scrolling through the phone book to the desired number, as well as from entering the name of the subscriber to search for it, which, by the way, also works in Russian. You can create caller groups in the phonebook. Entering information in Russian and English is quite monotonous and familiar. This model does not have the T9 predictive text input function, which is not very convenient for English-speaking users. Otherwise, entering the same SMS messages is quite simple, they can also be entered in Cyrillic characters (then the message length is reduced from 160 characters to 70). The phone can not only receive, but also send short messages in Russian, no additional settings are required. Up to 5 templates of 30 characters can be created for SMS messages (regardless of language). The R320s has a built-in voice recorder, and it even has a dedicated button on the keyboard. There are two speech recording modes that differ in quality - a recording with normal quality up to 92 seconds or a recording with enhanced quality up to 36 seconds. To my non-musical ear, I did not feel the difference. A recording can also be made during a conversation. And if we have already started talking about voice recording, then in addition to voice notes, the phone has voice dialing for 10 numbers. This function works very reliably and did not cause any complaints at all. Another interesting feature of the device is that when using a hands-free kit or a telephone headset, you can answer or reject a call with a voice command, which is sometimes very convenient. Of the remaining functions, it is worth noting the calendar, which has three types, this is the display of one day, week or month. You can add one of the events here - a call, a reminder or a meeting. In total, up to 100 entries are possible. For each event, it is possible to set a signal that can be triggered before or during the event. There is a countdown timer for a maximum of 24 hours, as well as a stopwatch. The calculator is very simple and not very convenient. Two games, Tetris, and in order to play it, the phone has to be rotated 90 degrees, as well as Klondike - a card toy. And a completely unique code memo function: you enter the password once and fill out a list of all your passwords to access, well, for example, the Internet. However, due to the inconvenience of entering these same passwords, I consider this feature unnecessary. Interestingly, the data you entered is encrypted, and if the password is entered incorrectly, it is displayed, but distorted. And finally, a feature that many have come to love lately is the WAP Browser version 1.1. Setting up the browser does not cause problems and was described a very long time ago on the MTS website, I give further this description without cuts. WAP: Ericsson R320s phone settings Enter the device menu by pressing the arrow key, select the item - "WAP Services" ("WAP Services"), enter the last sub-item "WAP Settings" ("WAP Settings"), select "Profile 1" ("Profile 1") and make the following settings: Rename (Rename): MTS Edit Homepage: Title (Enter title): MTS Show Images: On Access (Access): Access Type: GSM Data Tel. Line Gateway: User ID (User): mts After entering the settings, go to the "WAP Services" menu, enter the WAP Profile submenu and activate Profile MTS. To access the MTS WAP site, select the "MTS" sub-item in the "WAP Services" menu. Ericsson R320s has a special menu item - "Bookmarks", where you can save the addresses of the most interesting WAP-sites. You can also enter the address you are interested in using the phone keypad by entering the "Enter address" menu item, and after pressing the "Yes" key, go to the page with this address. If you liked the page and you want to save it in Bookmarks, you need to press the "Yes" key and do not release it for 2-3 seconds. After that, a menu will appear on the screen of the device, in which you need to select the "Add Bookmark" sub-item and the address of this page will be saved in the terminal's memory. Results In Ericsson R320s, the manufacturer tried to meet the needs of a small group of people and, as a result, the price of the phone is quite high, and the sales market is not so big. The phone has no major flaws, one has only to note the chronic non-recognition of the busy signal and the impossibility of auto redial as a result, as well as the weakness of the call. Everything else is quite on the level. The phone does not hang when browsing WAP pages, it has a more or less convenient menu, good sound.
