ERICSSON A3618. Mobile phone review
Review
The A3618 belongs to the segment of entry-level models, but at the same time offers a fairly good set of capabilities. The device is available in two colors - Icy Silver (blue-steel) and Graphite Silver (steel). For now, only Icy Silver phones are supplied to our country. A distinctive feature of the A3618 design is the absence of color contrasts - even the screen border is made to match the body. At the top of the device you can see three diagonally located slits for the speaker, and a little further on, a service indicator of the same shape (a very successful stylization!). The dimensions of the phone (111x45x22 mm) do not allow it to be carried in a shirt or jeans pocket: the device is too big for this, although it weighs 86 grams, which, of course, is not much, especially for a budget model. The keys of the phone are made of plastic, the numeric keypad has a matte silver finish. Markings made with black paint are difficult to distinguish when the backlight is working during the day, but are clearly visible without it or in the dark. Function keys are painted in dark gray color. Special mention deserves two cursors (left and right), designed to move through the menu. The keys themselves are small, but the distance between them is such that there are no problems when working with the keyboard. On the left side surface there is a volume control key recessed into the case - it is not very convenient to use it. In standby mode, you can use this key to view information about the phone's status (in particular, which profile is selected), the date, and whether an alarm has been set. There is no display of approximate operating time, as on older models: A3618 is a budget device. However, this phone boasts another important feature, namely support for multiple display backlight colors (green, blue, red and yellow). Color saturation, and therefore the ease of reading text on the screen, depends on lighting conditions. In sunlight, blue and green colors are preferable; in the dark, information is easy to read in any backlight (yellow is the least tiring color). Be that as it may, you can always adjust the contrast of the display (10 divisions). The screen fits up to 3 lines of text of 12 characters, additionally displays the title of the menu or a line of icons. The font in the menu is smaller than in the phone book and messages, but the information is well read in both cases. In the standby mode, the icons of the signal level (5 divisions) and the battery charge (no divisions - dynamic change) are displayed on the screen. The 650 mAh lithium-ion battery also functions as the rear wall, and is secured with two stops at the bottom and a latch at the top. There is a slight horizontal play, which may increase with intensive use of the phone. However, the contact pads are located so that backlash (even very large) cannot affect them. According to the manufacturer, the A3618 is capable of working up to 150 hours in standby mode and from 2.5 to 4 hours in talk mode. The actual performance, of course, is far from those indicated in the specifications: with the screen saver working, 25 minutes of calls and using the alarm clock, the phone functioned for only two days (46 hours). If you talk less, the period of use of the device can be increased to 3 days, but no more. It takes about 2 hours to fully charge the battery. Menu The menu in the A3618 is implemented in a traditional manner for Ericsson phones. To enter the main menu, which is a series of bookmarks with captions, you need to press one of the arrow keys. Fast navigation using digital sequences is provided. Submenus are presented in the form of numbered lists, items are selected by pressing the call send key, exit to the upper level - by pressing the End call key. Despite the support of the Russian language in the menu, Russian-language short messages are not readable, there is no (even in future plans) the possibility of entering in Russian. Phone book Up to 100 numbers can be stored in the phone's memory, and the SIM card memory is also available. Only one number can be assigned to one name. There are groups of subscribers, but you cannot assign a separate ring tone to each of them; only simultaneous sending of short messages to the whole group is possible. There are several ways to access the phonebook from standby mode. Pressing and holding a number key will take you to the first entry that begins with the corresponding letter (as on a number key). The second option: holding the right arrow, call up the name search menu, in which it is enough to type a few letters to get to the desired number. The device also supports fast dialing to 9 numbers. Some users will be interested in the ability to sort the contents of the phone book not only by names (by default), but also by entry numbers. Individual subscribers from the phone book can be assigned their own color of the display backlight - then when a call comes in, the screen color will change to the specified one (you can find this setting in the Color signal item of the Options - Display menu). Messages This item allows you to create up to 10 custom templates and configure the reception of broadcast messages. As already mentioned, SMS in Russian is not readable. Call Information In addition to call duration timers, a list of missed calls and a general list of calls (dialed, received, unanswered) are stored here, which indicates the type of call (icon on the left), name (if the number is in the book), as well as the time and date of the call. The general list can contain up to 20 numbers; in case of overflow, the oldest entries are automatically deleted. Parameters This section contains call settings. To set an incoming call signal, you can use the 14 melodies and 5 tones available in the phone (which, by the way, are also applicable for an alarm clock) or record a melody yourself (up to 4). To notify you of an incoming message, only a standard signal (sound or click) is provided. It also indicates whether the vibration alert is turned on and adjusts the volume of a regular ringer. The A3618 supports 5 user profiles that, when customized to suit your tastes and needs, make life a lot easier in most situations. In the same menu, the color and operating mode of the display backlight is set (turns on automatically, works constantly, always turns off). You can set one of two pre-installed animated screensavers to be displayed in standby mode. These are the main settings, but there are others that we will not dwell on in this review. Additional functions This item provides access to several useful functions. The first is the Calendar, which allows you to create events, for each of which you can set a reminder tone. Days for which events are listed are in bold. Jobs are viewed in turn - not a list. The calendar is designed to work with 25 events (which can be deleted all at once). The alarm clock is quite simple: you set the time and it wakes you up. It also works when the phone is turned off. The stopwatch allows you to save up to 9 intermediate values; it resets to zero when you receive a call or message. The countdown timer function is implemented in the most traditional way, the maximum time period is 100 hours. The phone has only three games - Tetris, Erix and Pulldown/Same. If the first two are known from other devices of this company, then the latter appeared for the first time in this particular model. This is a logic toy, the meaning of which is to combine and destroy the maximum number of identical balls. There is only one level, but, nevertheless, Pulldown / Same is interesting to play. Impressions The phone has a loud ringer, which is well heard both at home and on the street. The vibrating alert is average: you can feel it from the holster, but not always from the pocket of a winter jacket. The quality of speech transmission in the speaker is at its best, the voice of the interlocutor is heard clearly, although against the background of constant hissing, which could not be eliminated by adjusting the volume of the speaker: these are pickups in the device itself. There are no complaints about the sensitivity of the phone, in urban conditions it proved to be quite reliable. So, the A3618 is an entry-level device that, at a relatively low price, offers very advanced functions: different display backlight colors, an organizer, etc. The main disadvantages of the model are the lack of Russian-language input and the hissing of the speaker.
