Revolving door - a design of, as a rule, three or four doors, mounted on a central shaft and rotating along a vertical axis.

Revolving doors help keep the building at an optimal temperature by preventing the room temperature from rising or falling, while maintaining high throughput.

The first revolving door was created by the Berlin-based German inventor Bonhacker, who patented the concept on December 22, 1881; in the documents it was called "Tur ohne Luftzug" - "door without draft".

Blueprint "Tur ohne Luftzug"

The end of the nineteenth century changed the face of cities. Advances in the production of steel, glass and reinforced concrete led to the fact that buildings began to quickly climb up, giving rise to a new class of buildings. It is believed that progress was greatly facilitated by the invention of the elevator brake, which made elevators safe and thereby removed restrictions on sports training for visitors and residents of skyscrapers. But almost everyone forgets about the invention, which both figuratively and literally opened the door to high-rise construction. The fact is that visitors to the first skyscrapers faced one unpleasant, but, it seemed, completely inevitable physical effect.

Any high-rise building, riddled from top to bottom with stairwells, ventilation and elevator shafts, is potentially a giant chimney. Due to the pressure difference below and above, a powerful draft was created in the building, which, when the entrance doors were opened, generated not just drafts, but real gusts of wind. By the way, sometimes even opening the door was not easy - the air flow tried to slam it shut, overpowering the incoming one.

This is where Theophilus Van Kannel, a 47-year-old inventor from Philadelphia, entered the scene. It is not known what the inspiration was, but on August 7, 1888, he received U.S. patent number 387571 for the invention "outer door design". In fairness, it must be said that Van Kannel did not create his invention from scratch, but significantly improved the version of an earlier design by the German inventor Bockhacker.

Van Kannel's system was a revolving door that always blocked the opening and did not give any chance for drafts, wind, rain, and even street noise to enter the room along with incoming visitors. The door also cleverly separated the streams of people who enter and leave the building, and made it possible to do this at the same time. And, besides, the architects really liked the revolving door: it made it possible to feel the grandeur of the building's structure and decoration of the lobby.

A year after receiving the patent, Van Kannel received the prestigious John Scott Medal from the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia and founded the Van Kannel Revolving Door Company (later, after a series of reorganizations, the International Revolving Door Company). The first revolving door was installed in 1899 at the Rector's restaurant in Times Square, New York. And since then, thousands of such doors with the motto Always Open, Always Closed (“Always open, always closed”) stand guard over buildings, preventing wind, rain and snow from entering.

True, evil tongues say that Van Kannel was not at all a brilliant inventor, but simply hated opening the door in front of a woman and letting her go ahead - so he had to come up with a design that makes the one who enters first work. But this, of course, is nothing more than a rumor.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

New camel 26.04.2001

In the sand dunes of the Chinese province of Xinjiang, a new species of two-humped camel has been discovered, characterized by the ability to drink salt water.

A DNA analysis of the new species, carried out by Chinese and South African geneticists, showed that it differs from other camels by three percent of its genome. External differences from ordinary Bactrians are smaller and wider-spaced humps. Found four herds, a total of about a thousand animals.

The Chinese authorities are now organizing a reserve with a total area of 150 square kilometers to protect the new species. It is believed that by genetic engineering it will be possible to transfer genes to ordinary domestic camels that allow these animals to live on salt water.
