For passing

Dmitriev I.I.
Dmitriev I.I.

Phraseologism: For those passing by.

Meaning: It is jokingly-ironically quoted in response to someone's immoderate enthusiasm, when they judge something superficially, without knowledge of the subject, looking at everything from the point of view of a passenger, tourist, consumer, etc.

Origin: From the fable "Passer-by" (1803) by Ivan Ivanovich Dmitriev (1760-1837). It tells about a passer-by who entered the monastery and began to admire the beautiful view that opened up to him from the bell tower. "What," he cried, "magical places! // Suddenly I see mountains, lakes and valleys! // Magnificent pictures! // Isn't it?" - he asked a question to one // From the brethren standing with him. // "Yes! - the worker answered him with a sigh. - // For those who pass by". This fable is a loose retelling of the historical anecdote about the French king Henry IV, who, having once entered the monastery of Sieto, began to admire: "Oh, how good it is here! My God, what a beautiful corner!" At the same time, one fat monk answered all the royal praises with only one word Transientibus - For those passing by (lat.). Henry IV drew attention to this and asked him what he actually wanted to say. "I want to say, sir, that this is great for those passing by, and not for those who live here permanently." In Russia, this expression became widely used thanks to I. I. Dmitriev, whose works were very popular in their time.

Random phraseology:

I do not want to study, I want to get married.

Meaning:

Quoted as an ironic commentary on the moods of idle, lazy, narrow-minded teenagers who are only interested in entertainment.

Origin:

From the comedy "Undergrowth" (1783) by Denis Ivanovich Fonvizin (1744-1792). Mitrofanushka's words addressed to her mother (act. 3, yavl. 7): "The hour of my will has come: I don't want to study, I want to get married."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Powder coating of electrodes will improve battery parameters 09.09.2022

In recent years, scientists have been actively developing new types of rechargeable batteries, the performance of which should exceed that of lithium-ion batteries in all respects. Lithium metal batteries are considered one of the most promising types, but they have one drawback - the rapid growth of dendrites, tree-like conductive metal formations, which first reduce the battery capacity and then lead to its complete failure.

Researchers at Rice University have found a promising solution to the problem of dendritic growth. To prevent this, a coating of a special powder is applied to the surface of the electrodes, which allows you to keep the battery in good condition for a long time.

In lithium metal batteries, the graphite electrode used as an anode in lithium ion batteries has been replaced with a pure lithium metal electrode. This allows you to significantly increase the energy storage density, reduce the charging time and increase the number of charge-discharge cycles that the battery can withstand without significant loss of capacity.

However, the active growth of dendrites leads to loss of capacity, failure and spontaneous combustion in especially severe cases. Scientists at Rice University have been working on a solution to this problem for a long time, and they have developed several methods to combat dendrites based on the use of carbon nanotubes, laser processing and specialized coatings.

This time, scientists have proposed a new, fairly simple and effective way to protect the anode. First, the anode is subjected to a special treatment that gives it a textured surface. After that, a layer of fine powder from a compound containing sulfur and phosphorus is applied to the treated surface. This compound reacts chemically with the anode material and forms an ideal protective coating on it, which changes the surface energy and prevents the anode from losing metallic lithium.

The coating itself acts as a kind of stabilizer, smoothing out the current surges given off by the battery, giving a positive side to its durability. During experiments, batteries with a protected anode after 340 charge-discharge cycles retained 70 percent more capacity than those without a protective coating. And if you take another major metric of battery degradation called polarization, the new protective coating allowed it to maintain an ultra-low polarization level for 4 hours, about eight times longer than conventional batteries.

The use of powder-coated metal lithium anode significantly reduces the growth rate of tree-like metal formations, dendrites, leading to battery failure. It also prevents the accelerated consumption of the anode material, which increases the battery life.
