Alma mater

Latin
Latin

Phraseologism: Alma mater.

Meaning: home school.

Origin: From Latin: Alma mater. Translation: "nurse-mother" ("nursing mother"). Born in medieval Europe, a student parable for the university. This refers to the spiritual food that the university gave to students.

Random phraseology:

Beluga roar.

Meaning:

Loudly, uncontrollably and for a long time to cry, sob.

Origin:

Phraseologism is a reworking of the phrase "to roar like a beluga whale", in which a beluga whale is a polar dolphin capable of roaring. However, there is no evidence that the word beluga was ever used in this expression. In Russian they spoke and say only "roar beluga". The fact is that for a long time in Russian the word beluga meant both a large fish from the sturgeon breed and a polar dolphin. In the "Dictionary of the Regional Arkhangelsk Dialect" published in 1885, the sea animal, the polar dolphin, is called both the beluga and the white whale. At the same time, the word beluga is in the first place. Hence the beluga roar (i.e., like a dolphin). However, the word beluga whale entered the literary language, and now this is the only name for the polar dolphin. Beluga is now called only fish, which, of course, has nothing to do with the emergence of phraseology.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

The robot performed before the British House of Lords 11.10.2022

In its first address to the UK House of Lords, the realistically human-looking robot said artificial intelligence could be "both a threat and an opportunity" for artists. The Ai-Da robot got its name from mathematician Ada Lovelace. Back in the 19th century, the scientist made a description of an early version of the analytical engine (prototype of a computer) and compiled the world's first program for this machine.

Ai-Da took part in a meeting of the House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee as part of a study on the future of the art, design, fashion and music industries. Officials were interested in how artificial intelligence could affect the creative industry in the future.

"I create my images thanks to the cameras in my eyes. I can draw with my robotic hand thanks to the artificial intelligence algorithm. I create my own poetry by analyzing a lot of text, studying its structure and shape in order to create my poems. I differ from people in that I have no consciousness. I do not own subjective experiences, although I can talk about them," Ai-Da said in her report. "Although I am not alive, I can create art."

Not without curiosities - Ai-Da turned off when answering one of the questions, as a result of which the operator had to restart the machine.
