Honor to the madman who will inspire humanity with a golden dream

Pierre Jean Beranger
Pierre Jean Beranger

Phraseologism: Honor to the madman who will inspire humanity with a golden dream.

Meaning: About the dream of universal happiness.

Origin: From the poem "Mad Men" by the French poet Pierre Jean Beranger (1780-1857) translated (1862) by Vasily Stepanovich Kurochkin (1831-1875): "Gentlemen! will bring // Mankind a golden dream!"

Random phraseology:

Stay with your nose.

Meaning:

Fail, let yourself be fooled.

Origin:

The nose in this expression does not mean at all a part of the face, as you might think, it is a verbal noun from the verb to bear. According to one version, this refers to the nose that the groom, according to ancient custom, brought to the bride's parents (ie, "offering", "gift", "ransom"). If the groom was refused, the gift was rejected, then the groom remained "with a nose." According to another version (however, close to the first), the word nose is used here in the meaning of "offering", "bribe". In this case, to stay with the nose meant "to leave with an unaccepted offering, a bribe, to leave without an agreement."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Tablets are better for vision than books 25.11.2012

People with eye diseases usually experience difficulty in reading: increased fatigue, decreased reading speed. According to a study by American experts, with moderate vision loss, electronic devices with a backlit screen should be used for reading.

The study found that people with moderate visual loss read an average of 15 words per minute faster when using tablets and e-readers than when reading a regular paper book. Overall, using a tablet with a backlit screen increased reading speed for all participants in the study, regardless of visual acuity.

First of all, the study of scientists was aimed at finding a solution to the problems of people with macular degeneration (a degenerative disease of the central part of the retina). This disease is the most common cause of vision loss in people over 50 and affects millions of people every year. Unfortunately, the treatment of this disease by surgery is impossible, and glasses cannot solve the problem of visual impairment. So until now, in order to read, people with macular degeneration mainly used bulky and inefficient magnifying glasses.

The New Jersey School of Medicine study involved 100 volunteers with varying visual acuity. In the end, it turned out that when using the iPad tablet and font size 18, patients could read at a speed of at least 42 words per minute faster than reading a regular book or newspaper. A more modest gain of 12 wpm was achieved using a Kindle e-reader with the same font. However, the greatest progress with both devices was observed in people with the worst vision and the largest difference in visual acuity in each eye (at the level of 20/40).

The researchers believe that the main advantage of the iPad was the powerful screen backlight, which is important for a special factor of vision, the so-called contrast sensitivity. This ability allows you to highlight the object against the background and distinguish shades of gray. In people with low vision, there is almost always a decrease in contrast sensitivity. The bright, high-contrast color display of any traditional tablet is a big plus in this case. At the same time, the Kindle e-book, made using the E Ink "electronic paper" technology, does not have a backlight and is less contrasting for patients with low vision.
