Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

The risk of infection depends on the time of day 06.06.2013

The body's circadian rhythms can boost a person's ability to fight intestinal bacterial infection, researchers at the University of California, Irvine concluded. This discovery will help doctors treat infectious diseases more effectively. In addition, it is now becoming clear why people with irregular circadian rhythms are more susceptible to infections. For example, it is known that people who often fly planes in different time zones or work night shifts are more likely to get infectious diseases.

Scientists previously knew that many immune responses are subject to diurnal fluctuations, but the role of the circadian rhythm (biological circadian rhythm) in response to acute infections has not been studied. But now it has become clear that our internal biological circadian rhythm plays an important role in the fight against infections.

The work of about 15% of human genes is regulated by the circadian rhythm - the body lets us know what time of day is outside the window, what are the changes in the environment and how exactly we should adapt to them. Among the genes controlled by biological circadian rhythms, there are those that are responsible for fighting intestinal infections. Therefore, depending on the time of day, our response to the invasion of an intestinal infection will vary, which can affect the severity of the disease and the speed of recovery.

An experiment on mice infected with a dangerous intestinal infection - salmonella - showed that depending on the time of day, the body's ability to fight pathogens differs. And all due to the fact that the work of genes that help fight salmonella, controlled the circadian rhythms of the body. Of course, experiments on mice cannot be directly extrapolated to humans, because, unlike humans, rodents are nocturnal. However, this experience will help to understand the mechanism of the genes regulated by circadian rhythms - how exactly they control the work of our immune system and determine the strength of the immune response.

Understanding the principles of the circadian rhythms will enhance the effect of the usual drugs for the treatment of infections, because in this case, the treatment can be "strengthened" by the capabilities of our body and achieve a positive result faster.
