Facts speak for themselves

Alain Rene Lesage
Alain Rene Lesage

Phraseologism: The facts speak for themselves.

Meaning: About the eloquence of events or results.

Origin: From French: "Les fails parlent!" At first it was quoted in French, then it became winged in Russian translation. From the novel The History of Gilles Blas (1734) by the French writer Alain-Rene Lesage (1668-1747).

Random phraseology:

Cudgel of the People's War.

Meaning:

On the great possibilities of a people's war.

Origin:

From the novel "War and Peace" (vol. IV, part 3, 1) by L. N. Tolstoy (1828-1910): "Let's imagine two people who went out with swords to a duel according to all the rules of fencing art ... suddenly one of the opponents, feeling wounded, realizing that this was no joke ... he threw his sword and, taking the first club he came across, began to turn it around ... The swordsman, who demanded a fight according to all the rules of art, were the French, his opponent, who raised the cudgel were Russians ... Despite all the French complaints about the failure to comply with the rules ... the cudgel of the people's war rose with all its formidable and majestic strength and, without asking anyone's tastes and rules, rose, fell and nailed the French until the whole invasion did not perish."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

frozen light 08.03.2004

In 2001, two groups of scientists reported that they had succeeded in stopping the light. One under the direction of Mikhail Lukin, and the other - under the direction of Lene Howe.

Both groups slowed down the speed of light by passing it through gas atoms. Lukin used hot atoms of rubidium, Howe used supercooled sodium. Both groups reduced the speed of light to zero, but in doing so, all the photons were absorbed. The momentum could be regenerated because the energy of the photons was stored in the atoms. But when the pulse stopped, technically it contained no light at all.

Lukin and his colleagues Mikhail Baisky and Alexander Zibrov have now managed to stop light for a fraction of a millisecond with all their photons using a new method. But they believe that the light can be stopped for a longer time. This could be useful for use in telecommunications systems that send optical signals, or, even more fantastically, in quantum computers.
