Sphinx

Ancient Greek and Roman mythology
Ancient Greek and Roman mythology

Phraseologism: Sphinx.

Meaning: A mysterious, incomprehensible person.

Origin: From ancient Greek mythology. Sphinx - a creature with the body of a lion, with the wings of a bird, the face and chest of a woman. According to the ancient Greek poet Hesiod (VIII-VII centuries BC) in his "Theogony", the Sphinx, sitting on a high rock near the city of Thebes. asked the same question to all travelers passing by: who walks on four legs in the morning, two in the afternoon, and three in the evening? Those who could not solve this riddle, the Sphinx killed. The correct answer to this question was found only by the future ruler of the city of Thebes, Oedipus. He said that it was a man, that is, a child, an adult and an old man, leaning on a staff. Then the Sphinx, as a sign of his own defeat, took his own life. Hence the expression "the riddle of the Sphinx" - something incomprehensible, unsolved (iron.).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

In sneakers and barefoot 20.08.2012

It would seem that running barefoot is easier - the weight of the shoes disappears. However, measurements carried out at the University of Colorado (USA) showed that a runner without shoes spends 3-4% more energy than a runner in sneakers.

It is believed that the excess energy is spent on resisting the muscles and tendons to hit the ground, which are softened by the sole of the sneaker.
