Sodom and Gomorrah

Bible
Bible

Phraseologism: Sodom and Gomorrah.

Meaning: Dishonesty, sinfulness, crime.

Origin: From the Bible. According to the Old Testament, the ancient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah in Palestine were known for their sins, debauchery, and the dishonorable attitude of the townspeople towards strangers when they asked them for lodging for the night. The patience of the god Yahweh ran out, and he decided to punish these cities and sent angels to them to fulfill his will. Under the guise of simple travelers, the angels came to the city. One of the inhabitants of Sodom named Lot showed true hospitality and mercy, invited them into the house and fed them. Other Sodomites laid siege to Lot's house with the demand: "Bring them out to us, we will know them" (Genesis 19:5). Having been refused, they became embittered: “Now we will deal worse with you than with them” (Genesis, 19:9). Lot was saved by angels who blinded the attackers. Then the punishment befell the cities: "And the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord from heaven, and overthrew these cities, and all this region, and all the inhabitants of these cities, and the growth of the earth" (Genesis, 19:24- 25). Hence the expression "sodomy sin", meaning an unnatural sexual relationship.

Random phraseology:

Green noise is coming and going.

Meaning:

The image of spring, the first spring greenery

Origin:

From the poem “Green Noise” (1863) by N. A. Nekrasov (1821-1877): “Green noise is coming, // Green noise, spring noise! alder, // Raise flower dust, // Like a cloud: everything is green, // Both air and water." The poet himself made a note to this expression: "So the people call the awakening of nature in the spring." Nekrasov borrowed this image from the article "Days and Months of the Ukrainian Peasant", written by a botanist and ethnographer, Professor M.A. Maksimovich (1804-1873) and published in 1856 in the journal "Russian conversation" (No. 1, 3). The author writes that once he happened to hear how Ukrainian girls sang about "green noise", and explains how such an expression could have been born: "So in this green noise of the girls the Dnieper responded, retracting into the greenery of its meadows and islands, rustling in the spring flood and then giving complete freedom to fishing. One spring morning, I saw here that the waters of the Dnieper, and its sandy White Spit behind Shumilovka, and the very air above them - everything was green. e. the riding wind, running into the coastal alder bushes, which were then in bloom, he raised whole clouds of greenish flower dust from them and fluttered it throughout the midday sky "(I. S. Abramov. The origin of Nekrasov's poem "Green Noise" // Links: Sat M., L., 1935. Issue V).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

PLM-40E - 40W Step Dimming LED Driver 14.07.2016

Mean Well has expanded its range of low cost indoor LED drivers. At the moment, the new PLM-12E series has been added to the existing PLM-25E and PLM-40E series with 40W output power and only 24mm thickness.

The power supply has power factor correction (PFC; PF>0.95), operates in current stabilization mode (CC) and is available for the following standard load current values: 350, 500, 700, 1050, 1400, 1750 mA.

In addition to the low profile, a feature of the new series is the possibility of 3-step dimming through a conventional switch without additional devices. When switching off for a short time and then switching it back on (less than 2,5 sec / OFF-ON), the output current is reduced in steps of 100% - 40% - 10%.

In order to reduce the cost, in the new PLM-40E series, the manufacturer has abandoned the universal input (100/240 V). The input voltage range was chosen to be 180-295 V, which is in good agreement with our domestic electrical networks. For fixtures that do not require operation in 100/115 V networks, this series will be the best choice in terms of functionality and cost.

Main technical parameters and features of PLM-40E series:

Output power 40W
Stabilization mode - current stabilization
Output current from range: 350, 500, 700, 1050, 1400, 1750mA
Step dimming by switch
Input voltage range 180-295V
Power factor >0,95
Efficiency 88% (typ.)
IP30 (plastic housing with enclosed terminals)
Class II for electrical safety (grounding is not required)
Protection against short circuit and overheating
Operating temperature range -30°C...+40°C
Dimensions (LxWxH) 175 x 42 x 24 mm
