Skeleton in the closet

William Somerset Maugham
William Somerset Maugham

Phraseologism: Skeleton in the closet.

Meaning: Everyone has their own secret.

Origin: By the name of S. Maugham's novel "Pies and Beer, or the Skeleton in the Cupboard". The appearance of the expression is associated with medicine. Physicians in Britain were not allowed to work on dead bodies until 1832, when Parliament passed the Anatomy Act. Until then, the only bodies available for medical autopsy were those of executed criminals. Although the execution of criminals was by no means uncommon in XNUMXth-century Britain, it was unlikely that a particular physician would have had many corpses in his possession over his career history. For this reason, it was common practice for a doctor, who had the good fortune to dissect the corpse of an executed criminal, to keep the skeleton for research purposes. Public opinion at the same time did not allow doctors to keep the skeletons in sight, so they were forced to keep them away from prying eyes. For this reason, many suspected that doctors kept skeletons somewhere, and one of these places could be a closet.

Random phraseology:

Finest hour.

Meaning:

1. A moment of luck, the pinnacle of success. 2. A turning point, a decisive moment.

Origin:

From the author's preface to the collection of historical short stories "The Starry Clock of Humanity" ("Sternstunde der Menschen", 1927, Russian translation-1956) by the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig (1881-1942). He wrote: "... Each step of the era ... matures gradually ... out of millions of wasted hours, only one becomes truly historical - the finest hour of mankind... if the finest hour strikes, it predetermines the coming years and centuries." This is the only historical moment, according to the writer, and "predetermines the fate of hundreds of generations, directs the lives of individuals, an entire nation or even mankind." As Zweig himself explained, he called these turning points in the life of mankind so "because, like eternal stars, they invariably shine in the night of oblivion and decay."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

New generation universal spacesuit 12.02.2024

On the threshold of a new era of space exploration, there is the problem of outdated spacesuits that have been used by astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) for more than 40 years. These models are being replaced by a new generation of universal spacesuit, developed by Collins Aerospace in collaboration with ILC Dover and Oceaneering. This project, carried out under a $97,2 million Exploration Extravehicular Activity Services (xEVAS) contract, represents an important step in advancing space technology.

The development and implementation of a new generation of spacesuits opens up new horizons for space research. Modern technologies and improved suit performance will allow astronauts to work more efficiently and safely both on the ISS and on future missions to the Moon and Mars. This is an important step in space exploration and the expansion of human presence beyond Earth.

The new spacesuits were successfully tested in artificial microgravity on a special aircraft. It is planned that NASA will grant permission to test the new generation spacesuit in 2026, when astronauts go into outer space for repair work on the ISS.

The need to update spacesuits became apparent due to problems with current models: coolant leaks, mobility limitations and outdated technology. An example was the incident with astronaut Matthias Maurer in 2022, when a water leak occurred in his spacesuit, causing all exits to stop.

The new spacesuit from Collins Aerospace features improved features: less weight and volume compared to current NASA models, and an interchangeable architecture that allows it to be easily modified and improved. The design team worked closely with astronauts to create a versatile spacesuit suitable for future missions to the Moon and Mars.

After testing in microgravity conditions, additional tests are planned, including underwater and thermal vacuum tests. These critical tests under extreme conditions will help test the suit's functionality in a space-like environment.

Collins Aerospace's efforts are part of a global initiative to advance space exploration. She received an additional $5 million from NASA to develop an EVA spacesuit for missions to the Moon as part of the Artemis program. This project aims to improve the safety and efficiency of astronauts during spacewalks and is an important part of preparations for upcoming missions to the lunar surface.
