Put your teeth on the shelf.

Meaning:

Feeling the need, limit oneself to the most necessary, starve, switch due to lack of material resources to a half-starved existence (jokingly).

Origin:

There are two versions of the origin of the turnover. According to one of them, the expression does not mean someone's own or false teeth, which are put on the shelf as unnecessary. Teeth, teeth have many tools: saw, rake, pitchfork. There is work - a piece of bread is provided, no - put your teeth (i.e., tools) on the shelf and starve. Such "teeth" - the teeth were put on the shelf in the spring, when the hungry pre-sowing period began. However, according to another version, the expression still refers to human teeth. The image of teeth removed and put on a shelf is a vivid symbol of hunger.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Wine polyphenols help maintain healthy teeth and gums 05.03.2018

Wine polyphenols help maintain healthy teeth and gums, scientists from the Institute for Nutrition Research in Madrid and the Center for Advanced Public Health Research in Valencia (Spain) made such a discovery.

It was previously known that the polyphenols contained in wine are antioxidants that protect the body from the harmful effects of free radicals. Thanks to this, they, in particular, reduce the risk of developing cancer and heart disease.

Esteban-Fernandez and her colleagues studied the effects of polyphenols on bacteria that attach to tooth surfaces and gum cells and cause cavities and periodontal disease. The experiments were not carried out on real human tissues, but on cell cultures that imitated them.

It turned out that two wine polyphenols - caffeic and p-coumaric acids - significantly reduce the ability of bacteria that affect them to attach to cells, and thereby protect the organs of our oral cavity. These polyphenols work especially effectively in conjunction with the bacterium Streptococcus dentisani, which lives in our mouth and is considered a probiotic.

The authors of the study also showed that their metabolites, which are formed at the beginning of the digestion of these substances in the oral cavity, contribute to the beneficial effect of polyphenols.
