Goodbye, unwashed Russia

Lermontov M.Yu.
Lermontov M.Yu.

Phraseologism: Farewell, unwashed Russia.

Meaning: Usually cited playfully-ironically under appropriate circumstances.

Origin: From a poem (1841) by M. Yu. Lermontov (1814-1841), who wrote these lines before his departure for a second exile in the Caucasus. Blue uniforms were worn by gendarmes of the Third Department of the Chancellery of the Russian Emperor Nicholas I ("Okhranka"): "Farewell, unwashed Russia, // A country of slaves, a country of masters, // And you, blue uniforms, // And you, obedient people .. ."

Random phraseology:

Kisey lady.

Meaning:

A pampered, unadapted person (neglect).

Origin:

The turnover goes back to N. G. Pomyalovsky's story "Petty Bourgeois Happiness" (1860), the heroine of which wore a muslin dress. The expression became famous after the article by D. I. Pisarev "The novel of a muslin girl" (1865). The expression appeared in the word kisei, which is an expensive and extremely light, transparent paper fabric of plain weave, which was originally intended for draperies, curtains, etc. Provincial young noblewomen dressed up in such matter, bringing mystery and exoticism to their image. Thus, "muslin girl" is a fashionista.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

How to protect yourself from sea robbers 22.01.2001

Japanese designers are developing ways to protect against the attacks of sea pirates, which suffer ships in Southeast Asia.

The Togapotop system (translated as "tiger cage") reacts to the hit of metal hooks, which are the main weapon of pirates, on the deck of the ship. When hit by such hooks, the wire stretched along the sides bends or breaks, as a result of which a system of mirrors and fiber optic cables is activated, and a powerful searchlight is turned on, illuminating the place of attack.

Another system - Seajack Alarm - is based on the use of satellite tracking of the location of ships, speed and direction of movement.
