Sprinkle ashes on your head

Bible
Bible

Phraseologism: Sprinkle ash on your head.

Meaning: Indulge in extreme grief on the occasion of any loss, disaster (book).

Origin: From the Bible. It is found in many places of the Old Testament (Pentateuch, Book of Job, Book of Esther, etc.). Everywhere we have in mind the ancient custom of the Jews to sprinkle ashes or earth on their heads, mourning their misfortune or their loved ones. So, in the Book of Esther (4:1) it is said how a certain man named Mordecai, having learned that King Artaxerxes had issued a decree on the extermination of all the Jews, "tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out to middle of the city, and cried out with a great and bitter cry... "Vretishe" in translation from the Old Slavonic language means "rags" and "old, dilapidated clothes." Queen Esther does the same when she learns of this news (Book of Esther, 4:17): “And Queen Esther ran to the Lord, seized with mortal sorrow, and, having taken off her clothes of glory, she put on clothes of sorrow and mourning, and, instead of valuable suits, ashes and ashes sprinkled on her head ... "This custom was also characteristic of other peoples of the South and East. An analogue of another well-known expression is "to tear one's hair out."

Random phraseology:

Era set.

Meaning:

To be important, to lead a luxurious life (obsolete).

Origin:

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

New way to detect tsunami 25.04.2022

Japanese scientists have proposed a new approach to tsunami detection, which is to monitor muons.

Muons are high-energy elementary particles that are created by cosmic rays arriving from outer space. They are everywhere in the atmosphere and can pass harmlessly through almost anything. However, they can be very slightly displaced in their path by large natural forces, including tsunamis.

In order to detect the movements of muons, an incredibly sensitive instrument is required - TS-HKMSSD. He first detected tsunami waves through muon ripples.

"The Tokyo Bay Hyperkilometer Underwater Depth Detector is the world's first underwater muon observatory to detect various muon activity during a tsunami," said geophysicist Hiroyuki Tanaka of the University of Tokyo in Japan.

This variation is consistent with ocean waves that have been measured by other methods. Consolidation of readings means that muographic data can be used to accurately model sea level changes, bypassing other methods that have drawbacks.

A new study describes the TS-HKMSDD system that detected a weak tsunami that passed through Tokyo Bay in September 2021, caused by a typhoon approaching Japan from the south. As the ocean swelled, the number of muons slightly changed, scattered throughout the volume of water.

The same instruments could be installed in other tunnels in tsunami-prone areas and used in conjunction with equipment such as sea level sensors as part of early warning systems.

The muon detectors included with TS-HKMSSD are actually quite small, about two meters long. Currently, 20 of them are located next to the Tokyo Bay Road Tunnel, working together to create a common system. Such a system can be used not only to detect approaching tsunamis, but also to search for natural gas reserves and identify patterns of ancient earthquakes.
