Griboyedov A.S.

Phraseologism: Well, how not to please your dear little man?

Meaning: About nepotism, nepotism, protectionism.

Origin: From the comedy "Woe from Wit" (1824) by A. S. Griboyedov (1795-1829). Famusov's words (act. 2, yavl. 5): "How can you introduce yourself to a baptismal school, to a shtetl, // Well, how can you not please your dear little man?"

Random phraseology:

The corpse of the enemy smells good.

Meaning:

About the triumph of the winner.

Origin:

From Latin: "Optime olere occisum hostem". Literally: "The enemy's bones smell best." The words of the Roman emperor (69 AD) Aulus Vitellius (15-69), who, according to the Roman historian Suetonius ("Life of the Twelve Caesars"), said them after a battle with his predecessor, Mark Salvius Otho. The latter was proclaimed emperor by the Praetorian Guard and then deposed by Vitellius. Trying to defend his throne, Otho started a war with the "successor", but was defeated by his troops and, wanting to avoid captivity and shame, stabbed himself with a dagger. By the time Vitellius himself arrived on the battlefield to enjoy the spectacle of victory, some time had already passed. Feeling the smell of smoldering, one of the companions of the new emperor made a grimace. To which Vitellius objected: "The corpse of the enemy always smells good." But, returning to Rome, Vitellius did not rule for long. According to Suetonius, this emperor "with a face red from constant drunkenness and a thick belly" was torn to pieces by the Romans - supporters of Vespassian, who succeeded him on the imperial throne. "Fortunately for the state, Vitellius was defeated," the Roman historian Tacitus commented on this event.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Human height and political preferences are interconnected 23.08.2016

Scientists from the Ohio University (USA) argue that there is a certain relationship between a person's political views and his height. In other words, the political views and activity of people can be judged by their growth.

Often, tall people prefer to adhere to a conservative position, often they do not tend to strive for innovation and radical views. This trend applies to both women and men, although the latter are twice as likely to choose a conservative position.

Tall people are more willing to engage in active political activities, compared with other people. Small people are more inclined to give preference to the progressive views of the liberal persuasion. Previous research has found that tall people are wealthier than shorter people.

Tall people tend to be conservative, experts explain, because they don't want change because they fear losing their income.
