Maecenas

Gaius Zilniy Maecenas
Gaius Zilniy Maecenas

Phraseologism: Maecenas.

Meaning: Patron of people of art, science.

Origin: Named after the wealthy Roman patrician Gaius Cilnius Maecenas (between 74 and 64 - 8 BC), who patronized artists and poets. His attention and generosity to people of art were praised in their poems by the Roman poets Horace, Virgil, Propertius and others. For example, Martial (40-102 BC), in one of his epigrams addressed to Flaccus, wrote: , Patrons, there will be no shortage of Maroons, "that is, poets (Virgil's full name is Virgil Maron).

Random phraseology:

We are Kalutsky, it will not reach us.

Meaning:

We live far from the front (in Kaluga, Tambov, etc. provinces), the enemy (war) will not reach us, therefore, this war does not concern us.

Origin:

A phrase popular in Russia at the beginning of the 1th century as an analogue of the well-known European expression, the patriotism of the bell tower. The phrase is a symbol of "parochial patriotism", an undeveloped civic feeling (iron.). General A. I. Denikin about the Russian army during the First World War ("Essays on Russian Troubles", vol. I, ch. XNUMX): "The armed people", which was, in essence, the army, inspired by victory, lost heart in defeat, poorly understood the need to cross the Carpathians. A little more - the struggle in Styr and Pripyat, but still comforted himself with the hope: "We are Tambov, the German will not reach us ..." I have to repeat this rather hackneyed phrase, because it contains the deep psychology of a Russian person.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

People with glasses are smarter than others 05.10.2016

Nearsighted people are indeed more educated than those who don't need glasses. A study by scientists from the German University of Mainz showed that people with glasses are smarter than those with good vision.

3452 people took part in the experiment. The volunteers were tested for vision, as well as the level of intelligence using specially designed tests. The result - people with myopia showed a higher level of cognitive abilities compared to those who did not suffer from myopia.

It's all about the APLP2 gene. Thanks to the experiment, it became known that the APLP2 gene mutation causes myopia in children, but only if they spend a lot of time reading and computer screens. The same mutated variant of the gene does not cause myopia if a teenager looks into the distance more often.

Scientists advise to suppress the activity of the gene in humans, this will prevent the development of myopia. However, the problem is that APLP2 is very rare, in about 1% of the world's population.
